With Leigh, Lee, Jamie, Stuart and Chris P down to ride, you could be forgiven for thinking this was a T1 ride rather than a gathering of codgers and dodgers. The enthusiasm and energy displayed by the group were palpable, and it was clear that the Easter break had provided a welcome opportunity for those who might typically find themselves caught up in the daily grind of work to instead enjoy a refreshing day out on their bikes. The five riders already mentioned, along with Robert, RevDavid and Chris H, set off promptly at 9:30, while the earlier group consisting of Becky, Marcelle and Mick had already gotten underway at 09:00. It was a relief that all riders made it to the meeting point safely, especially considering the shocking state of Dark Lane, which presented a few challenges along the way. Upon arrival, all 11 riders indulged in a delightful assortment of teas, coffees, cakes, and sandwiches, accompanied by lively conversation and laughter. Our cafe hostess was particularly entertaining, her sense of humor adding to the overall enjoyment of the break. With such a vibrant atmosphere, I couldn’t help but wonder if she herself might be a cyclist, given her knack for engaging banter. For Stuart and Jamie, the C&D ride served merely as a brief interlude in their ambitious journeys of 106 and 124 miles respectively. Chapeau to both of you for your impressive distances. Meanwhile, Proby, ever the dedicated cyclist, returned home, changed his shoes, and ventured back out to push his total mileage up to an impressive 73 miles. Excellent work indeed.
However, it should be noted that Proby and RevDavid may both need to revisit their cycling proficiency courses after exhibiting some rather questionable roadcraft during the ride. Thankfully, no harm was done, but I can only imagine that the unfortunate bloke Proby nearly collided with—while he was riding on the wrong side of the road—probably needed a change of bibs after that close encounter. These moments serve as a reminder of the importance of staying alert and aware on the roads, especially when riding in a group.
Finally, no ride would be complete without the surprise appearance of Peter H, who seemed to materialize out of nowhere, adding to the camaraderie and joy of the day. The weather was absolutely splendid, creating the perfect backdrop for a day filled with great company and shared laughter. Happy days indeed, as the collective spirit of the group made for an unforgettable cycling experience.
Credits: A special thanks to Mick for expertly planning the route, and to Chris H for the excellent cafe suggestion that provided the perfect pit stop for our group. Your contributions were invaluable in making this ride a memorable one.
